May Day or International Workers day
May Day is an international holiday for
working people. May 1st World Workers' Day commemorates the historical struggle
of working people around the world. It is recognized in all countries of the
world. As a result of the sacrifice of martyr workers in 1886, today workers
are enjoying all the benefits. Today they receive minimum wage. They have job
security, safety, laws and 8-hours work time etc. On May 3, 1886, police opened
fire on strikers at the McCormick Harvest Machine Company in Chicago. They
killed at least one striker, and 5 or 6 were seriously injured and a determined
number of workers injured. From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution,
factory people had to work very long shifts, lasting for 14 or more hours a
day. A new movement in the 1880s inspired both labor unions and unorganized
workers to call for eight hours. May Day has become a symbol of workers all
over the world. These days they renew their commitment to fight oppression and
against human rights. It is the day that inspires workers to become obliged to
claim their demands. All in all, May Day is the day for international unity of
the working class. This day reminds workers to stand up against exploitation
and to achieve better working conditions, better wages and improved lives.
